Audrey Babcock – Mezzo-Soprano
Audrey Babcock – Mezzo-Soprano

Audrey Babcock does not simply perform opera—she commands it. With a voice of burnished velvet and a stage presence both dangerous and deeply human, the internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano has emerged as one of her generation’s most compelling artists. Her Carmen—performed more than 200 times across the United States and Europe—has been hailed as “spellbinding” and “mesmerizing,” a portrayal that continues to redefine the iconic heroine for modern audiences.

Recent seasons underscore her formidable dramatic authority: a razor-sharp Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd with Utah Opera, a visceral Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana with Opera Orlando, and commanding portrayals of Amneris in Aida with both Utah Opera and Anchorage Opera. She also made her directorial debut with a bold, psychologically charged staging of Carmen for Opera Memphis.

A fierce advocate for contemporary work, Babcock has originated roles with leading American companies and collaborated with Pulitzer Prize–winning composers. Deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of artists, she serves on the faculties of the California Institute of the Arts, Cal State Fullerton School of Theatre and Dance, and Cal State LA, and leads her private studio, Back to Breath Voice Studio, where her work bridges vocal technique, movement, and dramatic truth. Producer, creator, and educator, she crafts work that is theatrical, urgent, and unapologetically bold—onstage and beyond.
