Sydney Wang
Sydney Wang (b. 2002) is a Los-Angeles based pianist and composer whose work draws upon her extensive experience in vocal collaboration. She served as répétiteur in Music On Site, Inc.’s production of Don Giovanni in December 2024 and in the world premiere production of Daniel Kessner's opera The Camp in 2025. In June 2025, Wang will travel to Italy as répétiteur of Opera Lucca’s mainstage production of Le nozze di Figaro. A versatile solo and collaborative pianist, Wang is passionate about recording and performing both classical and new music. In March 2024, with special permission from the Bernstein estate and Indiana University, she recorded a full-length album of Leonard Bernstein's music on the composer’s own piano with a team of Indiana University's musicians and engineers. This project marks the first time an album has been recorded using Bernstein's piano. In June 2024, Wang performed as a pianist in the West Coast premiere of William Averitt’s oratorio Easter, 1906 alongside James Lent and the UCLA Chamber Singers. Wang is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, where she is a staff pianist working primarily with the voice department. She has studied with Ian Krouse, William Kinderman, Richard Danielpour, Derrick Skye, James Lent, Kay Rhie, Sarkis Baltaian, and Ya-Fei Chuang.
As a composer, Wang’s music has been played by acclaimed artists and ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pasadena Symphony, Orchestra Senzaspine, Salastina, New Thread Quartet, and Aperture Duo. From 2017-2021, she was a composer fellow in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program. Wang is the recipient of accolades including the 2017 BMI Student Composer Award and the 2020 Marvin Hamlisch International Music Award. Upcoming projects include a new work commissioned by the Los Angeles Brass Alliance, which will be premiered in May 2025.
Inspired by the vibrant new music scene in her hometown of Los Angeles, Wang is involved in the organization, programming, and hosting of composers concerts. She has produced composers concerts at UCLA, in San Diego, and in Italy. She believes that such impactful music and storytelling deserves to be heard and enjoyed by audiences everywhere.
