Critically-acclaimed singer Gregorio González began his soloist operatic career in 2002 after being hired as a resident artist by Placido Domingo at Los Angeles Opera. Since then, Gregorio has sung extensively throughout the United States, his native Mexico and Europe. At Los Angeles Opera, Gregorio created the roles of Count Obolenski and Avdeev in the world premiere of Nicholas and Alexandra under Mstislav Rostropovich. He has sung there in more than a dozen productions including La bohème, Carmen, Roméo et Juliette, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La fanciulla del West, Madama Butterfly, and Le nozze di Figaro. Later invitations from LA Opera led to other performances including appearances in two Placido Domingo and Friends gala concerts. Other U.S. performances by Gregorio include his portrayal of the roles of Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor at Virginia Opera and Lippo Fiorentino in Street Scene at Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Gregorio debuted his first leading role as Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia at Connecticut Opera. He has also performed for Des Moines Metro Opera, San Diego Opera, San Diego Comic Opera, the Moonlight Amphitheatre, and for the Ojai International Festival, where he sang the role of the King in Carl Orff’s Die Kluge, under Maestro Kent Nagano.

Gregorio made his European debut at Amsterdam’s prestigious Concertgebouw in 2006 in a concert version of Donizetti’s Poliuto conducted by Giuliano Carella and returned later to sing in Verdi’s Otello conducted by Jaap Van Zweden. Other European performances include the operas I Puritani and Willy Decker’s famous production of La traviata, both at the Nederlandse Opera in 2009. Gregorio’s first European engagement, however, was giving a voice to the character Harasta in the BBC’s animated film versions in Spanish and Catalan of the opera The Cunning Little Vixen by Janacek. This film was released on DVD and televised throughout Spain.

Recently, Gregorio has premiered 3 new operas in leading roles: as Julian Duarte in Roger Bourland’s The Dove and the Nightingale, as David Alfaro Siqueiros in America Tropical by David Conte, and as the Lumberjack in A Shipwreck Opera by John B. Hedges. He has also recently sung the roles of Gil in Wolf-Ferrari’s Il segreto di Susanna and the title role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Freud Playhouse in Los Angeles. He also performed to extraordinary acclaim the role of El Payador in Andreas Mitisek’s hugely successful production of Maria de Buenos Aires with Long Beach Opera and Chicago Opera Theater. Gregorio was a member of the original cast of Daniel Catán’s Il Postino at Los Angeles Opera and also performed this piece in Mexico’s Palacio de Bellas Artes for the Festival Internacional Cervantino and at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien. Earlier, Gregorio had sung at Theater an der Wien in Emilio Sagi’s famous production of Luisa Fernanda which also included Placido Domingo.

Gregorio has been greatly successful in competitions, both as tenor and baritone. He won First Place awards at the Gerda Lissner, Violetta Dupont, Palm Springs Opera Guild, La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Young Artists, Metropolitan Opera Western Region Auditions and Virginia Hawk competitions. Gregorio has also been distinguished as a finalist in competitions such as Plácido Domingo’s Operalia World Singer Competition, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the Francisco Viñas Competition. He has received additional awards from the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation, the Loren L. Zachary Society, the San Diego Musical Merit Foundation, the Florida Grand Opera Competition, and the Leni FeBland Foundation.
