A multi-faceted artist, Ms. Hanson combines work in opera, music theater, theater, and the concert hall. Performances of Poulenc’s La voix humaine (“Hanson’s singing was fresh and forceful…blazing dramatic fervor…” San Francisco Chronicle) added another role to her impressive list of operatic heroines, which include Cherubini’s Medea (in Suzan’s new adaptation), Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly, Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus, Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, Pat Nixon in Nixon in China, Floyd’s Susannah, Olympia-Antonia-Giulietta in Les contes d’Hoffmann, Magda in La rondine, Lady Macbeth, Fiordiligi in Cosa fan tutte, and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. She has performed with numerous opera companies, including Arena di Verona, Arizona Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Edinburgh, Long Beach Opera, Maggio Musicale (Florence), New Israeli Opera, Pittsburgh Opera Theater, Sacramento Opera, San Francisco Opera, Virginia Opera, and at Carnegie Hall. Frequently sought for new works, Suzan has originated many roles, including Eurydice (Eckert’s Orpheus X), Hanako (Glass’ Sound of a Voice), Raven 1 (White Raven, also by Philip Glass), Marie (Bohmler’s The Tale of the Nutcracker), and Madeline in Glass’ Fall of the House of Usher.
Suzan’s concert repertoire includes Camina Burana, Poulenc’s Gloria, Verdi’s Requiem, Strauss’ Four Last Songs, and Britten’s Les Illuminations with such orchestras as the Detroit Symphony, American Composer’s Orchestra, and the Miami Symphony. Theater roles include Lily in The Secret Garden, Maria in Wintertime, and Sharon in the national tour of Master Class opposite Faye Dunaway’s Maria Callas. Among the theater companies for which she has performed are San Jose Repertory Theatre, the Globe Theaters, American Repertory Theater, the Court Theater, Chicago, and the Denver Center Theater. Suzan’s recordings include TheTender Land by Arron Coplan on Koch and Coyote Tales on Newport Classics.
